Tanner grew up in Lake Charles, Louisiana and attended college at the University of Mississippi where he was a 4-year starter for the Ole Miss baseball team. Tanner was drafted in the 27th round by the Houston Astros as a junior but turned down the chance to play professional baseball to finish his education. Following his college career in which he had a career .327 batting average and still ranks in the top 10 in several offensive categories, he was selected by the Astros again, and played 3 years with the Houston Astros organization.

Tanner is happily married with 2 beautiful children. His wife Lacy is a high school softball & basketball coach at Community ISD in Nevada, TX. They have a 6-year-old son named Jaxon and a 1-year-old daughter named Wittyn. They reside in Wylie, TX.

Tanner is financial advisor and has been in the financial industry since 2015, starting with Edward Jones in their Financial Advisor Career Development program, in St. Louis, Missouri. He then ran a successful office in Germantown, Tennessee before moving to the Dallas area with his family. He joined Elite Financial Management in September of 2019. In his spare time, he loves spending time with his family & friends. He also plays golf and is an avid duck hunter.
